Many Oakville homeowners have been paying for a rental hot water tank for years without giving it much thought. The charge shows up every month, the tank keeps working, and it is easy to forget it is there. When it is time to replace your water heater, it is worth asking a simple question: why rent when you can own?
Here is what you need to know about renting versus owning, the types of water heaters available, and how to make the switch.
What Does It Mean to Rent a Hot Water Tank?
When you rent, a rental company owns the equipment in your home. You pay a monthly fee for as long as the tank stays installed, and you are tied to the terms of your rental agreement. Those payments keep adding up year after year, and the equipment never becomes yours.
The Benefits of Owning Your Hot Water Tank
- No monthly rental fees. Once your water heater is installed, there is no ongoing charge for the equipment.
- No rental contract. You are not locked into an agreement or its terms.
- It is yours. Your water heater is part of your home, not equipment on loan.
- The right fit for your home. You choose the type of water heater that suits how your household uses hot water.
Gas, Electric or Tankless: Which Is Right for You?
Gas Hot Water Tanks
A dependable, familiar choice for many Oakville homes with a natural gas connection. Our licensed gas technicians handle the installation, including connecting your new water heater.
Electric Hot Water Tanks
A good option for homes without natural gas, or where venting a gas unit is not practical.
Tankless Water Heaters
A tankless water heater heats water on demand for a continuous supply of hot water. Its compact, wall-mounted design also frees up space in your utility room.
Not sure which one is best? We will assess your home and recommend the right fit.
Signs It Is Time to Replace Your Hot Water Tank
- Rusty or discoloured hot water
- Water pooling around the base of the tank
- Rumbling or popping noises coming from the tank
- Running out of hot water more often than you used to
- Your tank is getting older and you would rather plan ahead than wait for it to fail
If you notice any of these signs, it is a good time to start planning your replacement and to consider owning your next water heater.
